Scammer arrested with fake documents & IDs of State, Central governments

The police on Tuesday arrested a man in Dehradun for duping a person under the pretext of providing a job to his daughter by claiming to be an officer of the State Estate department. The police also recovered several fake documents and IDs belonging to various departments of the State and Central governments, the officials said. The accused has been identified as Sanjay Kumar (34), a resident of Pauri, who duped the complainant Jagdish Singh of Rs 20,000. He had introduced himself to the victim as Avnish Bhatt. Kumar had allegedly promised him to get his daughter a job as a data operator in Dehradun collectorate. After getting the said money, he handed over a counterfeit joining letter to the complainant on February 2. However when the woman reached the collectorate, the officials there informed her that the letter was fake.

The police registered a case against the accused and started the investigation. The police finally arrested him from near Dehradun railway station late on Monday, as per the officials. The police recovered several fake documents and IDs belonging to various departments of the State and Central government departments. The police also recovered a scooty from his possession that he had rented from a shop at Prince Chowk but did not return it. The shop owner had also registered a complaint against him last month.

The officials said that Kumar revealed during the interrogation that he is BA pass and came to Dehradun about 18 months ago to drive cabs as a means of employment. Since he was not making enough money, he started working as a notary in a photostat shop near the court premises. The accused has claimed to have made all the fake documents and IDs in this shop and had allegedly scammed several people in the name of providing them benefits under various government schemes. The police are investigating the matter and will take action accordingly, the officials added.
