The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will start the operation of the city’s first electric crematorium for humans in Lakkhibagh early next year. The municipal commissioner Abhishek Ruhela informed that the corporation has built a room for the installation of the crematorium and most of the work associated with installation will be finished this month. “We have completed the construction part of the installation procedure of crematorium. The corporation has also received the electric crematorium machine too. We recently applied for power connection and once we get it, the electric crematorium will be installed,” stated Ruhela. He also informed that this crematorium project has cost about Rs two crore to the MCD and consistent efforts are being made to complete all the pending procedures this month. He further said that the corporation had the target to complete the crematorium project in nine months since February this year but the project got delayed due to the second wave of Covid-19 in the state.

“We are currently focussing on completing the installation process of crematorium this month. Subsequently, we will also work on making policies and guidelines on its usage by the public. We are yet to decide the charges for cremation at this crematorium. All of this would be decided by the next month and the electric crematorium will be functional from early next year,” stated the commissioner.

Meanwhile, the officials also informed that the corporation is also working on establishing an electric crematorium for animals to give them a proper farewell after they die. They informed that MCD will send a revised detailed project report (DPR) to the state administration for approval soon. However, the officials claimed that no specific location has been chosen for the installation of the crematorium yet.
