HC issues notice to Centre & State in PIL on Raini disaster

The Uttarakhand High Court has issued notice to the Central and State governments and sought their replies in three weeks regarding the bodies missing since the Raini disaster which occurred in the Chamoli district in 2021.The division bench of chief justice Vipin Sanghi and justice Alok Kumar Verma issued this direction while hearing on a public interest litigation filed by a Delhi resident regarding recovery of the missing bodies of the Raini disaster and conducting their last rites.

Delhi resident Acharya Ajay Gautam had filed the PIL in the High Court stating that a number of people were missing since the flood in the Dhauliganga river at Rani village with the authorities having confirmed the death of 206 people. Stating that the State government did not search for the bodies missing since the disaster, the petitioner has contended that 122 people are still missing from the area. He has further contended that it is the responsibility of the State government to recover the bodies of the missing persons and conduct their last rites.
