Polling in the state Assembly election for 70 constituencies in Uttarakhand was held without any major incident in 11,697 polling booths of the state on Monday. The accurate polling percentage will be declared after the return of polling parties to the collection centres following completion of the polling process. This figure is expected to be released on Tuesday.

It is pertinent to mention here that polling in this Assembly election was held in observance of Covid-19 protocols. There were hand sanitisers in all polling booths and the voters were also provided with disposable gloves for using the electronic voting machine. The State’s chief electoral officer Sowjanya informed that about 80,000 officers/employees and about 40,000 security personnel- a total work force of about 1.20 lakh were involved in handling various aspects of the election. During the mock poll and till completion of polling technical faults were found in 137 Bus, 155 CUs and 294 VVPATs which were replaced by the sector magistrates concerned. The final figure regarding this will also be released after the return of the polling parties. After completion of polling, 9,358 out of total 11,697 polling parties are slated to return to the collection centres by late on Monday night while the remaining 2,312 polling parties from distant areas will return on Tuesday. Sowjanya thanked all the voters who exercised their franchise while observing Covid protocol. She also thanked all those on polling duty for discharging their responsibilities properly. She also thanked the political parties and the media for successful conduct of polling in the Assembly elections.

It is worth mentioning here that though there were complaints of alleged irregularities from some areas during the polling, the polling for the Assembly elections was held without any major incident in the state. Though both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress are claiming to be confident of their own victory in these elections, the verdict of the voters will be known on March 10 when the counting of votes is slated to be held.
