The survey team of the State’s Landslide Mitigation and Management Centre will conduct a survey of cracks and landslides occurring at two famous peaks of Nainital district – China Peak and Tiffin Top between May 17 and 20, said the district magistrate Dhiraaj Singh Garbyal. The DM had formed a team last week that included a geologist, district disaster management officer, assistant executive from the Irrigation department and the senior officers of Public Works Department, Revenue department and Forest department to conduct the survey of the famous hilltop Tiffin Top or Dorothy’s Seat after the officials observed cracks there. The team conducted a survey there on Monday and advised the DM to ban all kinds of tourist activities and movement considering the safety of tourists and local people. According to their report, the cracks found on the northern and southern ends have reportedly been caused due to deviation between the joints of carbonate rocks in the hilltop. Garbyal said that the team told him that a geotechnical survey must be done of the area to thoroughly understand and study the cracks to get a permanent solution of the issue. He said that as per the advice of experts, he wrote to the disaster management and rehabilitation department to conduct a geo-technical survey which will now be conducted between May 17 and 20.
