The Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) will open Swadhar Grah for rehabilitation of women saved from forced prostitution. The USCW head Kusum Kandwal stated this on Thursday during the interactive meeting of State commissions for women held by National Commission for Women (NCW). The USCW vice president Jyoti Shah also presented the issue of forced prostitution in mountainous areas of the State before NCW. She said that many women are being allegedly pushed into prostitution in mountainous areas and many commit suicide due to inability of taking any action due to societal shaming. Such cases are generally not deeply investigated by the police to nab the persons who actually pushed the women into forced prostitution as they consider them mere suicide cases but it must be changed, said Shah. She also said that the commission should also hold counselling sessions of leaders of transgender groups in mountainous areas to motivate them and young transgender to attend schools and get employment opportunities for their overall development like any other person in the society. She also appealed to NCW to cooperate  in strengthening the Anganwadi centres too. The NCW has asked the USCW to submit its proposal to the commission.
