The chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW) Rekha Sharma said on Thursday that changing the age-old practice of the commission to only take action against complaints lodged by women, the commission has now been working for holistic development of women across the country in aspects ranging from their health to financial independence. She stated this in the third interactive meeting of State commissions for women held here on Thursday. The national commission conducted the quarterly meeting in association with Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) to hold discussion on issues affecting women across the country. The chairpersons and representatives of State women commissions gave a presentation of the work being done in their respective States to uplift women. The commissions also presented their issues before NCW and held discussion on several issues including working on improving the overall condition of transgender, skill development of women, condition of women prisoners in jails and free quality legal aid for them and rehabilitation of women saved from forced prostitution among others. Representatives of various commissions mainly pressed on the need for understanding the situation of transgenders in every State and make necessary arrangements for them as per the requirements. The NCW also discussed setting up Swadhar Grah to rehabilitate women who are forced into prostitution. The NCW has asked all the commissions to submit a proposal along with their action plan on their respective issues for its analysis at central level.
