The chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) Geeta Khanna has directed the departments concerned to stop child marriage on the day of Akshaya Tritiya which falls on May 10 this year. She gave this instruction during a review meeting on Wednesday. The review meeting was attended by SCPCR members and senior officers of departments concerned with women welfare aside from labour and police.

The meeting was convened to discuss matters likely to come up at the upcoming meeting of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights with all the child bodies in the States on May 13.

To recall, Khanna had approached the State government, requesting them to prevent any child marriage on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. This was in response to an order issued by the Rajasthan High Court which stated that village heads would be held accountable regarding child marriages in Rajasthan on Akshaya Tritiya.
