The Women Empowerment and Child Development (WECD) department has initiated the verification process for the applicants who have registered to access the benefits under the Nanda Gaura Yojana (NGY). According to a WECD official, a significant number of applicants from across the State have registered to avail of the benefits under NGY for the year 2024. The department has extended the deadline for applying under the scheme from February 15 to January 31 due to unavoidable reasons, he said.

He further added that from February 1, the District Programme Officer (DPO) of each district in the State has begun the verification of the applicants’ details and their accompanying documents, as part of the process to access the benefits under NGY. Once the verification is complete, the DPO will submit a report containing the details of the applicants to WECD. He emphasised that after the submission of the report, the funds for the year will be transferred to the accounts of the beneficiaries.

It will be recalled that the WECD director Prashant Arya had earlier stated that the guidelines for the scheme have been recently modified, restricting eligibility to only those girls who have already enrolled in college to pursue higher education. He informed that in 2022-2023, about 35,000 girls registered under the scheme. Due to unavoidable circumstances, their payments were not processed. These payments will also be made this year.
