Setting up an example, the District Magistrate of Uttarkashi Abhishek Ruhela made it a point to plant saplings of red paddy in a field in the district on Thursday. On the initiative of Ruhela, the agriculture department has decided to cultivate local red paddy this year in about 200-hectare area of the Ganga valley of the district.
In order to put this initiative on the ground, Ruhela himself went to Utraon village of Bhatwadi block and started transplanting red paddy after plowing the field with a power seeder. Chief Agriculture Officer JP Tiwari and many farmers also accompanied him on the red paddy crop plantation.
The villagers were very excited and overwhelmed concerning the plantation of red paddy crops in the district. Apart from this, the rural women celebrated this plantation campaign by singing traditional songs and praying to the folk gods for the success of red paddy cultivation. Praising the efforts of the administration, the villagers said that this experiment of red paddy cultivation can bring a new phase of change in their lives.
Red paddy cultivation has been done on a large scale in the Rawai region of Uttarkashi district in the intermediate areas of Yamuna and Tons river. Apart from this, the red paddy of Rawai has made its own identity in the State.
