Uttarakhand’s first AI voice cloning fraud case registered in Doon

The Dehradun police have registered the State’s first case of an artificial intelligence voice cloning scam in which a Vasant Vihar resident has been cheated of over Rs six lakh. According to the officials, a complainant who lives in Kalindi Enclave of Vasant Vihar area filed a complaint on Saturday that she received a call from an unknown number on August 7 saying that her son’s vehicle had caused an accident. The unknown man purportedly handed over the phone to her son  who crying and asked her to send Rs 6.4 lakh in certain accounts to settle the matter, said the officials. They said that the complainant believed the person on the phone to be her own and sent the said amount to the two account numbers but when she called her son again, he told her that he had not met with any accident and did not ask her for any money. The complainant immediately froze her account and went to the police station to file the complaint. The officials said that a case has been registered at Vasant Vihar police station against the cyber fraud. They said that it is the first AI voice cloning cheating case reported to the police in the State.  The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Daleep Singh Kunwar said that cyber frauds are now using Al tools to modulate the voice of a person to dupe his/her family members and friends by demanding money citing an emergency. He said that the police have also issued a public advisory, cautioning people against falling into such traps by always checking with their friends and families, on whose names the fraudsters had called. The victims should immediately inform the local police or call on helpline number 1930 to report such cases, he added.
