The Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) earned a record profit of Rs 56 crore and recovered from the loss for the first time in the past 20 years. The chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday honoured UTC secretary Arvind Singh Hayanki and UTC managing director Anand Srivastava at the Secretariat. He said that Uttarakhand got 957 new and old buses from Uttar Pradesh as part of the roadways as a new state about 22 years ago. The operation of roadways started with the new system in the new state but continued to incur losses due to bad buses, bad roads and the mismanagement and liability of UP. The UTC’s condition got worse after the coronavirus pandemic hit the State in 2020. However, the corporation started making profits soon after Dhami took charge as the CM. Srivastava also said on the occasion that UTC has been in profit for two consecutive years. This is helping to improve the salaries of employees, improve services and strengthen the roadways system. The transport department will soon launch new routes and new buses. He said that the corporation currently has 1350 buses operating within the State and in other states. Out of these buses, 151 CNG equipped buses are running on the Delhi route. The department is considering purchasing 200 CNG buses in the near future to operate on mountain and plain routes. The process of purchasing 130 buses for hilly routes is already in the final stages which will strengthen the state’s transport system to a great extent, he added.
