The expert committee constituted by the State government for preparing the draft of the syllabus of MBBS course in Hindi medium has submitted its detailed report to the state administration. The committee is made up of the vice chancellor of the Uttarakhand Medical Education University, Dr Hem Chandra and the head of department of radiotherapy of Government Doon Medical College (GDMC), Dr Daulat Singh. The committee went to Madhya Pradesh which has already implemented the Hindi medium syllabus in its medical colleges. The committee has prepared the syllabus on the lines of MP. The syllabus has been approved by the academic council of the Uttarakhand Medical Education University and it has now been sent to the State administration for final approval. After the syllabus is approved, Uttarakhand will become the second State in the country where the students will have the option to undertake medical studies in the Hindi medium. As of now the MBBS course can be pursued only in English medium in the State. The Health and Medical Education minister Dhan Singh Rawat has already announced that the medical students will have the option of Hindi medium from the academic session 2023-2024.  He said that the initiative will be a gift for the students who have come from Hindi medium schools.

It is pertinent to mention here that paucity of doctors and other medical staff is a major concern especially in the mountainous regions of the State. The State government has taken various steps to encourage doctors to serve in the mountainous regions. With its efforts achieving limited success so far, the introduction of MBBS in Hindi medium is expected to provide a fillip to the State’s medical health services.
