Post-UCC surge in marriage registration

 Saturday, 02 March 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

In latest news from Doon, following the passage of Uniform Civil Code bill in the Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha, the rate of marriage registration has shot up by 30 per cent. The sub-registrar’s office in the Collectorate is seeing swarm of newlywed couples along with the queue of those who come for land registration. Taking note of the swelling number of couples for registering their marriages, the administration is setting up a separate desk for marriage registration at the sub-registrar’s office. Notably, as per the UCC bill -now awaiting the Governor’s assent to become an act-registration of marriages is mandatory, the cut-off date being March 26, 2010.  For those whose marriages happened before this date, registration is optional.

The administration is happy to note that the queue of the newlywed couples keeps lengthening though the UCC is yet to become an act.  This is a healthy trend, said an officer working at the sub-registrar’s office, adding that before the passage of the UCC in VS, about 450 couples would come for registration and post-UCC, the number shot up to about 580 in February-marking 30 per cent increase.
