The cyber crime police station of Uttarakhand Special Task Force (STF) has arrested a cyber criminal Rishabh Sharma (27) from Haryana’s Gurugram. He is reportedly a mastermind of a gang and has committed cyber fraud worth at least Rs 22 crore in the name of providing work from home. Besides this, 37 FIRs are registered against him in various parts of the country. He is also suspected of being involved with cyber criminals from China, said deputy superintendent of police of STF cyber crime police station Ankush Mishra. He said that a man registered a complaint in the Dehradun cyber crime police station against an unknown person who duped him of Rs 19.94 lakh. “The complainant was searching for a job when he got a WhatsApp regarding a work from home opportunity. The victim claimed that the accused sent him a link on the Telegram app and after clicking on it, he lost Rs 19.94 lakh,” informed Mishra. He said that the cyber team started the technical investigation and found out that the accused was related to Haryana. After gathering evidence against the accused from various States, the team filed a case against Sharma and arrested him from Gurugram late on Thursday. The DSP said that a total of 85 complaints are registered against him in the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP). Sharma along with his gang members also reportedly opened fake bank accounts for Chinese scammers in various cities like Surat, Baroda, Gurugram, Noida and Ludhiana. They also generated counterfeit GST and import-export registration numbers to open the bank accounts, said Mishra. He said that Chinese customers used to pay large amounts to the gang members and the arrested accused also received Rs 4.78 lakh for letting them operate his two bank accounts for two days. He said that the STF is investigating the matter and might arrest more accused in the case. The STF senior superintendent of police Ayush Agrawal appealed to citizens to not be tempted by work from home job offers from unknown sources and asked them to refrain from giving any kind of response without checking the authenticity of the source. He also appealed to the public to always register a complaint against cyber fraud at www.cybercrime.gov.in or call at 1930 to register a financial fraud complaint.
