The principal chief conservator of forests (Head of Forest Force) Vinod Kumar launched the book ‘Manual of Jurisprudence for Forest Officers’ by Baden Powell. The book has been published by Natraj Publishers, Dehradun.

First published in 1882 the book is considered to be a  classic treatise on Indian forest law. This book formed the basis for the formulation and implementation of the Indian Forest Act as it exists today. The book documents important legal understanding of fundamental aspects of forest administration in India, and discusses the issue of encroachment which is most relevant to modern times.

The PCCF said the publication of the book will help and prove to be an excellent reference text for all those engaged in the task of protecting the rich forests and wildlife, particularly now when the need for vigilance is greater owing to the development and protection of natural resources. Powell was a British civil servant belonging to the ICS cadre, who conceptualised the importance of introducing forest law for the successful management of forests.
