The officiating director general of police Abhinav Kumar said that traffic management and road safety is among the priorities of the government. Considering this, the lack of manpower should be addressed through the Uttarakhand Purv Sainik Kalyan Nigam Limited (UPNL). Requirement for more Home Guards and Prantiya Rakshak Dal jawans should also be sent to the State administration. He said this during a discussion with senior police officials on traffic and road safety on Tuesday.

The officiating DGP directed officials to ensure the visibility of the police in cities during peak hours. The parking of vehicles should not be allowed in front of residential and commercial complexes. Further, some acres of land should be identified in each of the four large districts and this should be used for parking the vehicles abandoned and related to cases which are otherwise kept at police stations. This will help free up space in the police stations and also improve their appearance, he said.

The additional director general of police (Crime, Law and Order) AP Anshuman informed that personnel appointed in the city patrol unit will also be considered part of the traffic police. He said that the number of registered vehicles in the State is 33 lakh, compared to which the human resource is considerably less. The DGP issued a direction to get an audit done for this purpose.

The Traffic director Mukhtar Mohsin gave a presentation on traffic and road safety along with aspects including traffic police human resource and current status of equipment and resources. He also spoke about the problems and challenges related to traffic and road safety. Mohsin informed that currently there are 28 interceptor vehicles in the State. In the future, all two-wheelers purchased for traffic duty should be heavy duty with 400-500 CC capacity. The human resource and other necessary resources should be increased in the districts where the fataility rate is high. Further, black spots should also be identified and the data on these should be prepared and analysed so that such sites can be identified and the accidents can be prevented, he said.
