Officials step up installation of camera traps in Gangotri national park

Following the closure of the Gangotri national park to the public on November 30, the authorities have stepped up the task of installation of 40 camera traps to monitor the movement of wildlife in the national park for a period of four months. Officials said that 31,235 people visited the national park this year. Gangotri national park ranger Pratap Singh Panwar said that a good number of tourists visited the national park this year due to better preparations and arrangements.

Meanwhile, after the closure of the national park to the public for the winter, the authorities are installing 40 camera traps to monitor the movement of wildlife. The administration has stepped up the work of installing the camera traps. Officials further informed that while the state-of-the-art camera traps will enable monitoring the movement of the wildlife, long distance patrolling has also been started to protect wildlife from poachers.

It is pertinent to mention here that in addition to rare fauna and flora, the Gangotri national park is also noted for the high Himalayan peaks and the treks to Gaumukh and Tapovan. The national park is situated in Uttarkashi district in the upper catchment of the Bhagirathi river. It is enveloped by dense coniferous forests comprising pine, deodar, fir, spruce, oak and rhododendrons. The wildlife in the national park includes snow leopard, Himalayan brown and black bears, musk deer, Himalayan monal and Himalayan tahr among others.–
