Police & Administration prepared to act against offenders: DGP

Uttarkashi district administration on Wednesday imposed section 144 in Purola town of the district for five days in view of the proposed Mahapanchayat on June 15 regarding the alleged love Jihad cases. The sub divisional magistrate of Purola, Devendra Sharma said that the district administration has imposed Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) that authorises the authorities to issue an order to prohibit the assembly of four or more people in an area. He said that the administration took this decision to maintain harmony, law and order in the town. He said that the administration has rejected the appeal to conduct Mahapanchayat on Tuesday considering the current scenario in the town but if the local groups still proceed with the plan, action will be taken as per the law.

Meanwhile the director general of police Ashok Kumar said on Wednesday that the superintendent of police of Uttarkashi Arpan Yaduvanshi has been directed to take action against those trying to disrupt law and order in the area. “The district police and administration are fully prepared. We are taking all the steps to maintain the law and order in the state, no one will be allowed to break the law and action will be taken against those who will try to break it,” Kumar said.

The additional director general (law and order) V Murugesan also said, “Recently there have been incidents of elopement in Uttarkashi, Vikas Nagar and other areas. Local people are agitating. FIRs were registered. Police are doing their duty to establish peace. Whoever breaks the law, strict legal actions will be taken against them. An investigation is underway.”

He said that if the local groups organise a Mahapanchayat on Thursday, the police will take strict action under the provisions of section 144 for violation. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to hear the petition on the Mahapanchayat proposed to be held in Purola on Thursday regarding alleged love Jihad cases. The court has asked the petitioner to approach the High Court.
