Will not allow Mahapanchayats in Dehradun: SSP

Police will not allow a series of Mahapanchayats to take place in the Dehradun district that can potentially disrupt harmony among communities besides disturbing law and order, said the senior superintendent of police Daleep Singh Kunwar. He said this after a few groups belonging to a minority community were said to be approaching the authorities to conduct Mahapanchayat in various parts of the district since the announcement of Mahapanchayat in Uttarkashi’s Purola by Hindu groups on alleged love jihad cases on June 18.

He said that the police have been interacting with the representatives of the minority community to use other alternatives if they want their voices to be heard by authorities or officials concerned. He said that a similar Mahapanchayat was also proposed to be organised in the Bhaniyawala area on Monday but the police officials talked to them after which they cancelled it. He said that they are also in talks with people organising Mahapanchayat on June 18 and making them aware of the repercussions of such a large gathering in the city in the current scenario. “We are giving them options to present their points and issues to respective authorities and administration rather than organising this gathering,” said SSP.

Talking about the possibility of the implementation of Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) in the city as imposed in Uttarkashi’s Purola, SSP said that it might be imposed here too while adding that police will take stringent action against those acting against the rules. The SSP has also stated that the police will act under the National Security Act (NSA) if harmony, law and order are disrupted in the city.
