MCD writes UEPPCB for RDF disposal under SWM Rules

Saturday, 20 August 2022 | PNS | Dehradun

Considering the heaps of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) accumulating in the waste management plant premises for a long time, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has presented a proposal to the Uttarakhand Environment Protection and Pollution Control Board (UEPPCB) to mandatorily ensure five per cent consumption of RDF in all industries as per Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules 2016.

The municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal said that door to door garbage collection is being carried out in all 100 wards and the processing of the collected garbage in waste management plants produces tonnes of RDF on daily basis. Due to insufficient means of disposal in the city or across the State, accumulation of RDF is becoming an issue in maintaining sanitation and disposal of garbage efficiently.

He said that according to SWM Rules, it is mandatory for all the industries concerned to replace at least five percent of their fuel requirement by RDF produced through the garbage disposal process. “To ensure the implementation of this rule in Dehradun, we have written a letter and given a proposal to UEPPCB. We have requested the board to take necessary steps required to implement this rule. We are also working on approaching the state administration about the issue in order to ensure proper disposal of RDF in the city,” said Goyal. He added that the corporation is expecting to get a response from UEPPCB by September.
