The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) provided safety kits to over 200 rag pickers for the safe handling of waste. The corporation also conducted a one-day training programme on the weekend in which they were informed about the benefits of separating dry and wet waste along with the ways to protect themselves during picking garbage. The Dehradun municipal commissioner Manuj Goyal handed over safety kits to rag pickers at the community building located near Kanwali Road. The kits included reflector coats, gloves and masks along with an identity card. The officials said that the organisation Waste Warriors in 2019 identified over 700 families involved in rag picking across the city through a survey. The corporation provides these families with safety equipment every year since then as per the guidelines of the Swachchh Bharat Mission, claimed the officials. As part of this programme, the corporation provided the safety kits to over 250 rag pickers on Sunday too. The councillor of Kanwali Road ward, Vishal Kumar said that most of the rag pickers reside in Kanwali Road, Chuna Bhatta, slums near Bindal Pul, Sapera Basti and Kargi Chowk area of the city and over 200 rag pickers live in his ward alone. He said that providing them with kits and identity cards is MCD’s initiative to integrate them into the Swachchh Bharat Mission of the country as they immensely contribute to keeping the city clean while they earn their livelihood through it every day.
