MCD board defers decision on hiking mutation charges

Monday, August 22, 2022 | PNS | Dehradun

The proposals of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) to increase the mutation fee from Rs 150 to Rs 5,000 and door to door garbage collection fee from Rs 50 to Rs 100 failed to get approval in the board meeting due to heavy opposition from the councillors in the board meeting on the weekend. According to them, the proposed hike in the mutation fee was huge which will affect many local people and the MCD should consider adjusting the prices accordingly.

Councillors also argued against increasing the monthly garbage collection charges as according to them, the vehicles do not even arrive several days in many wards and  MCD should first focus on improving door to door services.

Talking about the proposal, the mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ said that mutation charges have not been increased for decades and the present amount is quite less per the current times causing considerable financial loss to the corporation.

However, he postponed the decision on both matters and directed the officials concerned to form a committee to consider all issues and possibilities.

Besides, it has also been made mandatory for vendors with vegetable and fruit carts to get police verification besides having their respective Aadhar cards with them all the time if they wish to set carts in public places. The mayor said that vendors should also have a valid license to set up their carts as per the rules or action will be taken against them. The members took this decision when several councillors demanded action against the encroachment of carts on the main roads. According to them, there is a considerable increase in the number of carts in the roadside areas, most of which are set up by people arriving from neighbouring states. This causes traffic jams and occasional accidents, as per the councillors.

Besides this, the corporation has also decided to install radiological chips on the animals in the dairies to tackle the issue of cattle being abandoned on the streets. The corporation will also appeal to the state administration to approve the budget of Rs eight crore to set up a Biogas power plant in MCD’s cow shelter in Selaqui.

The councillors also expressed their disappointment about the LED streetlights issue across the city stating that hundreds of lights are inactive in many wards for months but nothing has been done by the company concerned. ‘Gama’ has directed the company to take action against the employees responsible for negligence and take action on the complaints by September.
