Higher reaches covered in blanket of fresh snow

The weather took a turn as forecast on Monday afternoon with snowfall being experienced in the higher reaches and rain in the comparatively lower altitudes. High altitude regions in the mountainous districts were covered with a blanket of fresh snow. Coupled with rain in the lower mountains, the change in weather has once again intensified the cold in the mountainous regions of the State. Similar weather is expected on Tuesday with a warning also being issued regarding the possibility of thunderstorms in some parts of the State.

The State meteorological centre has forecast that light to moderate rain/thunderstorms are likely to occur at most places in Uttarakhand today. Light to moderate snowfall is very likely to occur at places situated at altitudes of 2,500 metres and above. The State meteorological centre has also issued an orange warning (Alert) regarding the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied with lightning/hail/gusty wind (30-40 kmph) very likely to occur at isolated places in the State.

The provisional State capital Dehradun is forecast to witness a partly to generally cloudy sky. Light to moderate rain/ thunderstorms accompanied with lightning/hail/gusty wind (30-40 kmph) are likely to occur. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be about 21 degrees Celsius and 11 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun today.

On Monday, various high altitude regions in the State including Badrinath, Hemkund-Lokpal, Valley of Flowers and Auli in the Chamoli district witnessed snowfall. The Niti and Mana valleys were also covered in a blanket of fresh snow. The weather was cloudy since Monday morning and snowfall started in the higher reaches by afternoon along with rainfall in the lower altitudes. There was about half a foot of snowfall in Badrinath while fresh snowfall past afternoon at Auli enthused snow sports enthusiasts and those involved in tourism related businesses. The provisional State capital Dehradun received very light rainfall.

The maximum and minimum temperatures recorded in various parts of the State on Monday were 22.6 degrees Celsius and 12.4 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun, 25 degrees Celsius and 11.5 degrees Celsius in Pantnagar, 14.6 degrees Celsius and 5.4 degrees Celsius in Mukteshwar and 13.6 degrees Celsius and 7.3 degrees Celsius in New Tehri. There was 1.4 millimetres rain in Tehri, 0.8 millimetre in Mukteshwar and 0.5 millimetre in Dehradun.
