The Goods and Services Tax (GST) department will resume its campaign this week to increase awareness among local businessmen about GST regulations and verify the unregistered businesses under GST across the Dehradun district.

Over a month ago, the department had started the campaign in Paltan Bazaar to raise awareness among the local businessmen in coordination with the business associations. Subsequently, the department had planned to take this campaign in the marketplaces in Doiwala but it was later postponed. “We had to postpone our plan of conducting this campaign last month in Doiwala due to certain reasons but we will be resuming it this week,” stated the joint commissioner of the GST department, Rakesh Verma.

Talking about the impact of the campaign, he said that it was quite successful in Paltan Bazaar as many did not even know before that it is mandatory to register a business with an annual turnover of over Rs 20 lakh under GST. He said that most of the businessmen did not mandatorily display their respective GST numbers in their shops as well as on the boards outside the shops as per the regulations but these rules are being followed in the area now due to the awareness raised by the department. He said that around 60,000 businesses are registered from Dehradun in the GST department out of about 1,80,000 businesses in the state which makes it more important to make the businessmen here fully aware of the GST regulations. He also added that this number will certainly increase in the district after the completion of this campaign.

The commissioner said that after Doiwala, the department will organise these campaigns in Mussoorie and Vikasnagar after coordinating with the respective business associations there. The department will also conduct camps for those who want to register their businesses under GST, added Verma.
