Raising a big question mark over the quality of the Covid-19 tests being done at government labs, the Uttarakhand Medical Lab Technician Association has said that acute shortage of staff is adversely affecting their work. The Lab technicians have also threatened to go on a work boycott from September 13 if the issue of shortage of manpower is not addressed.

In a letter written to the Director General (DG) of state health services, the general secretary of the association Manoj Mishra said that due to pandemic of Covid-19, the Lab Technicians (LT) are working round the clock  in the works like sampling, rapid antigen test, RTCPR, True Nat and other tests and many have themselves got infected with the virus. He said that the Covid-19 work load has adversely affected routine tests. Mishra said that in the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital, Gandhi centenary, SPS hospital and Coronation hospital, the LTs are working 12- 14 hours a day. “Imagine the condition we are working in. One LT would first take samples of 100 patients and then would test their samples. How would one ensure quality in the whole process? Recruitment of LTs and their management is very essential,’’ Mishra said.

The association has said that its members would wear black armbands from September 8 to 12 and would start a work boycott from September 13.
