Elephant mowed down by locomotive in Lalkuan

A male elephant died after being hit by a railway engine in Lalkuan on Wednesday night. According to the forest staffers, the train-hit incident occurred when the jumbo aged around 14 years was crossing the railway tracks on its way towards Terai Eastern Forest Division’s Gaula range after coming out of Tanda forest in Terai Central Forest Division. A calf aged around eight months was injured in the incident.

Notably, three elephants have died in train-hit incidents in two months in Lalkuan Bareilly railway section, Lalkuan Rampur railway section and Lal Kuan Kashipur railway section.  

As the locomotive pilot informed the foresters about the incident after reaching Pantnagar railway station, the senior forest officers rushed to the site and the injured calf was taken to Dolly Range for treatment.  SDO Anil Kumar Joshi said that a team of doctors was treating the calf and the post-mortem of the dead elephant was done by a panel of three doctors.   He further said that appropriate legal actions would be taken against those to be found responsible for this incident.
