Crash barriers to be set up along hill zigzags to mitigate mishaps

In latest news from Doon, with road mishaps continuing unabated across the State taking huge toll of lives, the State public works department (PWD) is mulling to set up crash barriers along road stretching to 3720 km. The secretary PWD Pankaj Pandey has directed the officials concerned to firm up a plan for the erection of the crash barriers along roads, particularly the zigzags cutting through hills. On approval of the plan, budget would be sanctioned for executing it, he told the officers. He further said that the work would be completed in two years and expressed the hope that the funds to be used in this project might be approved by January-end. Notably, the roads in the State stretching to 7688 km are being looked after by the National Highway Authority of India and Border Roads Organisation aside from the PWD under the State government.  While 3666 km stretch has already been equipped with crash barriers and parapets 4021 km stretch is to be equipped with them out of which 3720 km is under PWD’s jurisdiction.
