Covid-19 surge continues in poll bound U’khand

1,560 new cases on Saturday; Positivity Rate surges to 10.26 %

Even as the small Himalayan state of Uttarakhand is preparing itself for the assembly elections, the programme of which was declared by the Election Commission (EC) on Saturday, the alarming surge in the Covid-19 cases indicates that the third wave of pandemic has probably started in the state. The state health department reported 1,560 cases of the disease on Saturday which is the highest figure after 1,687 cases reported on May 29 last year. The unprecedented surge in the positivity rate (PR) in Uttarakhand is also worrying the experts. The state has a positivity rate of 10.26 per cent. The founder of Social Development for Communities (SDC) foundation, Anoop Nautiyal said that the PR of Nainital is 26 per cent while that of Dehradun and Haridwar is 16 and 11 per cent respectively. He said that the current spike is unprecedented as the cases in the state have increased by 13 times from January 1 (118) to January 8 ( 1560).

The cumulative count of Covid-19 patients in the state is now at 3,49,472 while a total of 3,32,173  patients have recovered from the disease so far. A total of 7423 people have died in the state so far. The recovery percentage from the disease is 95.05 per cent while the sample positivity rate has increased to an alarming 10.26 per cent on Saturday.

The state health department reported 537 new patients from Dehradun, 404 from Nainital, 303 from Haridwar, 82 from Pithoragarh, 52 Almora, 37 from Udham Singh Nagar,  28 from Tehri, 24 from Pauri, 20 from Uttarkashi, 13 from Bageshwar, eight from Chamoli and six Rudraprayag on Saturday. 

The state now has 3254 active cases of Covid-19. Dehradun with 1157 cases is at the top of the table of active cases while Nainital has 914 active cases of the disease which is followed by Haridwar district with 609 active cases. Rudraprayag is the only district in the state where the active case count is in single digit with eight cases.

 In the ongoing vaccination drive 57,477 people were vaccinated in 1101 sessions in the state held on Saturday.
