Hearing on a public interest litigation on government residences in Tehri being encroached upon, the Uttarakhand High Court has directed the government to issue four-week eviction notice to those illegally occupying the government residences and also collect rent from them. The division bench of chief justice Vipin Sanghi and justice Alok Kumar Verma said that if the residences are still not vacated, the petitioner is free to approach the court again.

Tehri resident Sunil Prasad Bhatt had filed the PIL stating that government officers and employees were allotted residences under pooled housing society at Tehri in 1976. Since then, many of those allotted the quarters have been transferred while others have retired and some have expired. However, the residences have not been vacated till now by such government employees. The petitioner further stated that the residences which were vacant have been occupied by people from outside. The government has neither got the quarters vacated nor collected rent so far. The petitioner had requested the court for getting the illegally occupied government residences vacated and collection of full rent.
