Fire audit reveals safety lapses at GDMC hospital, management to be told to act

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

The  Fire Services will send a letter to the administration of the Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) hospital and notify district magistrate Savin Bansal regarding the alleged irregularities found in GDMC hospital during the fire safety audit conducted by the police on Monday. The failure of the fire safety system at one of the largest government hospitals in the State has raised serious concerns.

The Dehradun chief fire officer VB Yadav said that the audit revealed several issues in the hospital, which receives thousands of patients daily in its Outpatient department (OPD) and Inpatient department (IPD), in addition to housing hundreds of admitted patients. He informed that during the inspection, the Fire services team attempted to start the fire water pump but its battery failed to operate. Four fire extinguishers were also found to be non-functional. These findings indicate that no recent fire safety drills or equipment maintenance had taken place at the hospital, as per Yadav. The audit came shortly after a nationwide security mock drill was conducted in response to recent tensions between India and Pakistan.

Yadav stated that a formal letter will be sent to the hospital administration and the matter will also be reported to the DM. The department will also recommend immediate corrective actions to address the gaps and ensure the safety of patients and staff in the hospital, he added.
