HC seeks Govt response on witness protection policy

Hearing on a public interest litigation regarding ineffective implementation of witness protection policy in the state, the Uttarakhand high court has sought the State’s response within three weeks. The matter was heard by the division bench of acting chief justice Ravikumar Malimath and justice Ravindra Maithani.

According to the case details, Haridwar resident Ruhani had filed the PIL contending that a proper witness protection policy has not been made in Uttarakhand due to which various problems are faced by witnesses. The petitioner has stated that there should be witness protection committees in each district and that one women police station should also be established in each district.

On Tuesday, the government’s counsel informed the court that the said policy has been made but could not be implemented effectively in all the districts. Considering this, the division bench asked the government to submit a detailed affidavit regarding the matter in the court within three weeks.
