The State health department has come into an alert mode on Dengue and Chikungunya in Uttarakhand. The department has issued a 20 point guideline for the district magistrates and chief medical officers of all the districts for the vector borne diseases. The secretary, health, R Rajesh Kumar who is conducting regular review meetings on control of these vector borne diseases said that in recent years Dengue and Chikungunya have come up as a major public health issue. He said the Aedes mosquito is the vector of both these diseases. He said that public participation holds the key in the control of Dengue.  He added that inter departmental coordination is also necessary to combat these diseases.

Kumar said that the departments should prepare a block-wise micro plan for these diseases and send it to the State vector borne diseases control unit. He said that the municipal corporations should undertake sanitation campaigns to control breeding of mosquitoes.

Kumar said that source reduction is an effective way of controlling spread of Dengue and Chikungunya. He said that municipal bodies should undertake fogging in different areas to prevent Dengue and Chikungunya from reaching epidemic proportions.

Kumar directed that all the government and private hospitals and doctors should follow the ‘national guidelines for clinical management of dengue fever’ of the government of India.

Dengue is a viral infection spread by the mosquito Aedes Aezypti popularly known as Tiger Mosquito.  The symptoms of the disease are persistent high fever, rashes, headache and pain in the joints. In the acute cases the platelets number decreases drastically which may prove fatal for the patient.
