Video shows Lansdowne MLA threatening to slap a Transport department employee

The Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from Lansdowne Dilip Singh Rawat has landed in a controversy after a video of him threatening to slap an employee of the Transport department in Kotdwar went viral on social media on Saturday.

The Uttarakhand Congress lost no time in attacking the BJP government on the incident. The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara said the incident reflects the mindset of BJP leaders. He said that had the BJP  State president Mahendra Bhatt taken disciplinary action on cabinet minister Prem Chand Agarwal in the past for thrashing a youth on the road then the BJP MLA would not have dared to engage in such a deplorable act.

The chief spokesperson of Uttarakhand Congress Garima Dasauni said that Uttarakhand is getting shamed by the action of BJP ministers and MLAs. She said that the State unit of BJP took no action in the case in which the cabinet minister Prem Chand Agarwal thrashed an RSS worker on a busy road in Rishikesh in broad daylight. Similarly, no action was taken on the councillors who attacked businessman Pravin Bhardwaj in Ansal Green valley.

Dasauni said that the public representatives should set an example before the youngsters by their good manners and actions but the Kotdwar incident shows that the BJP leaders are running amok with their rude behaviour. She added that the incident will widen the gap between the public representatives and government officers.

The officer was extorting money from public: MLA

The BJP MLA from Lansdowne Dilip Singh Rawat has claimed that the Transport department officer was engaged in extortion of money from the general public. He said that a fair in the Siddhbali temple was underway in Kotdwar when people told him that the officer is extorting money. It is pertinent to mention here that Rawat is also the Mahant (head priest) of the Siddhbali temple in Kotdwar. The MLA defended his action and added that the officer has also employed people who help him in this illegal activity.
