Five teenagers who had come to attend a marriage function drowned in the Sarayu river. The five persons from Ganai Gangoli area of Pithoragarh had come here to attend a marriage. They decided to bathe in the river near the home they were visiting.
However, while bathing in the river, they were unable to gauge the depth of the river and drowned in it. According to information provided by the district disaster management centre, Berinag police station received information about the incident at 12:15 PM after which the district officials and police reached the site. The bodies were recovered from the river with the help of the villagers and sent for post mortem.
The deceased have been identified as 15 year old Ravindra Kumar, 15 year old Sahil Kumar, 17 year old Mohit Kumar, 16 year old Rajesh Kumar and 15 year old Piyush Kumar. Governor Baby Rani Maurya and chief minister Tirath Singh Rawat have expressed grief over the incident.
