Holi celebrations turned fatal for four men who died while 10 were injured at Paithani in Pauri district on Thursday after a Max jeep carrying 14 passengers fell off the road, down the mountainside. The police circle officer (CO) of Pauri, Premlal Tamta told The Pioneer that the vehicle was carrying 14 persons belonging to Chamoli, who were on their way to Pauri to celebrate Holi. “The accident occurred on Thursday evening in the Paithani area. It is being speculated that the driver lost control of the vehicle. It is also being said that some men were drunk which might have caused the accident too but nothing can be said with certainty so soon,” said the CO. He said that one man died on the spot while the other three men died during the treatment in hospital. He said that others have sustained minor injuries and have been provided with the required medical treatment. The police will soon take the statements of the passengers and look into the matter, added Tamta.

The accident took place on the stretch between Paithani and Khand when the jeep fell off the road and down a 25 metre deep gorge. The police were unable to reveal the names of the dead as the Panchnama process was underway till the time of this report being filed. All the men in the jeep were residents of Basura village in Chamoli district. The Paithani police station officer Pratap Singh informed that the jeep fell off the road about one kilometre from Khand. All the injured were taken to the community health centre at Paubo from where they were referred to higher centre at Pauri.
