HC directs State to clarify in alleged hate speech case

Hearing on the bail application of Wasim Rizvi alias Jitendra Narayan Tyagi who is accused of hate speech at an event in Haridwar, the Uttarakhand high court has directed the state government to clarify the position by February 23. The next hearing on the application will be held on February 25. The matter was taken up for hearing by the single bench of justice RC Khulbe.

According to the case details, resident of Jwalapur in Haridwar, Nadeem Ali had lodged a complaint with the Haridwar police on January 2. He had stted in the complaint that a Dharm Sansad programme was held in Haridwar from December 17 to 19 last year. Some of the speakers had made objectional statements targeting a particular community, the complainant had alleged. Later, the videos of Rizvi, Yati Narsinghanand and others also went viral on the social media. The complainant stated that the inflammatory speeches had disturbed the peace in the district while also causing embarrassment at the national and international level. Acting on the complaint, the police lodged a case against Rizvi, Narsinghanand and others under sections 153 A and 295 of the Indian Penal Code for hate speech in the Haridwar event. Rizvi has approached the high court seeking bail and quashing of the FIR.
