The chairman of Uttarakhand Public Service Commission (UKPSC), Rakesh Kumar has tendered his resignation. In his resignation letter written to the governor of Uttarakhand on Saturday, Kumar has cited personal reasons behind taking the decision to step down from the post. The governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh has accepted the resignation of Kumar.

Kumar, a retired officer of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) was appointed as chairman of UKPSC on December 24, 2021 for a period of six years. However he resigned after serving for about one and half years.

The resignation of Kumar has created an uncomfortable situation for the State government which was trying hard to resurrect the image of the recruitment agencies, the UKPSC and the Uttarakhand Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UKSSSC). A series of paper leak cases had affected the image of these agencies and triggered a student unrest in the state.

In the last one and half years, the UKPSC under the leadership of Kumar selected 4,000 candidates in different posts in State government. He was instrumental in designing a calendar of examinations of the commission. The UKPSC also conducted 30 recruitment examinations during his short tenure.
