U’khand team raises medal tally to 8 in National Winter Games

Alpine skiers of Uttarakhand won two gold medals in alpine slalom skiing race by defeating experienced international level skiers of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu-Kashmir on the fourth day of the Khelo India National Winter Games at Gulmarg in Kashmir. The skiers from Uttarakhand won a total of five medals including two golds on Monday, raising the total of medals won by the State team to eight. In the girls category of the alpine slalom race, Uttarakhand’s Bharti Bhujwan won gold, Mahak Kawan won silver, Bhawna and Mansi won bronze medals. In the boys category, Priyanshu Kawan won a gold for Uttarakhand in the under-16 category of the slalom race.

Sharing information from Gulmarg, the Uttarakhand skiing team coordinator Santosh Kunwar informed that on Monday the athletes from Uttarakhand exhibited their best performance to win five medals in one day. So far Priyanshu Kawan has won a total of two gold medals in joint slalom and slalom race with better timing while Mahak Kawan has also won two silver medals so far. After winning a gold in the alpine slalom race on Monday, Bharti Bhujwan has won two medals so far. The Khelo India National Winter Games is slated to conclude on Tuesday. Since most of the skiers in the Uttarakhand team are from the Joshimath region, there is an atmosphere of celebration especially among the snowsports fraternity in Joshimath and nearby Auli. The Uttarakhand skiing and snowboard association general secretary Praveen Kumar Sharma expressed happiness at the Uttarakhand team having won a total of eight medals so far in the national games.
