Ban on plastic items imposed in govt schools of U’khand

In an effort to make all the government schools of the state free from plastic, the education department of Uttarakhand has imposed a ban on all types of plastic items in the schools. In an order the director general (DG) of School Education, Bansidhar Tiwari said on Saturday that in a meeting held on March 14, the chief secretary of the state had directed that the schools of the state should be made plastic free. He said that all the plastic items such as bottles, plates, glasses and carry bags have been banned in all the schools and offices. Tiwari said that the schools would make arrangements for water dispensers for drinking water and the teachers would carry water in the metal bottles. He said that the teachers and other members of staff and employees would use bags of jute and cotton instead of plastic bags. Tiwari said that the students should be informed about the ill effects of plastics on the health and the environment. He said that all the offices of the education department would place a notice board of plastic free offices and directed that the officers should ensure that the orders are being followed. There are a total of 14,271 primary and 3833 secondary schools in the state.
