Parents & students consider school resumption unnecessary at the end of academic year
Despite the State government’s approval for resuming schools for class X and class XII from November 2, most of the parents and students are still reluctant about attending regular classes in schools. While the parents stated that it is not essential to resume schools when the course of the whole academic year is almost finished, students opined that joining the schools again might be a disturbance as they will have to be extra careful in school premises. “I have been at home since the final exams of Class IX. I am preparing hard for my board exams. I attend e-classes of the school besides attending tution for maths and science which is near my house too. I have a schedule and I really do not have to go outside much and even if I go, I maintain physical distance. Now it is little different in school with all the friends for four to five hours everyday,” said 16 year old Rohan Singh, a class X student. According to him, children come to schools from different areas and different families and one cannot say who could be a carrier of the contagious disease. An 18 year old class XII student, Anjali Gusain also opined that resuming regular classes in school at this time might be a distraction rather than being helpful in the board exams.
“Everyone is already studying through private tutors or online tuition classes besides attending school’s e-classes. Considering this it is not necessary for every student to go to school. The course is almost finished for this class so going to school is really not necessary for every student. Probably the science students can go occasionally for their practicals and laboratory experiments but the Commerce and Arts students can do quite well without being physically present in the class,” said Gusain. Some science students also expressed their concern stating that most of the science experiments are done in groups and it would be difficult to maintain distance in such situations. They said that they do not want to take risk of getting Covid-19 or get bothered about having it during their board exams.
Moreover, several parents also stated that they do not want to risk their children’s health when the academic year is almost finished. They said that they might send their children to school in January after winter vacation to revise the course for board exams but not this year. “When the big private schools cannot take the responsibility of the students in school, how can we send our children among hundreds of people who will probably arrive from several different places? Also, the course is almost over and we have paid tuition fees of our children for the last several months so we are not sending them in the crowd when the board classes usually get dismissed,” said a Sahastradhara Road resident, Sandhya Dwivedi.
