The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) on Wednesday imposed a penalty of Rs 2.41 lakh on 16 people operating commercial establishments in the city for blatant use of single-use plastic and sanitation violations on Wednesday. A sanitation team under the supervision of chief municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna conducted an inspection of the wholesale vegetable and fruit market of Niranjanpur where all the vendors were using single-use plastic openly despite the ban. The team imposed penalties on 14 vendors as well as shopkeepers who had a stock of single-use plastic products. Besides this, the team also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the management of Reliance Jio Mart situated at GMS Road for improper garbage disposal practices, said Khanna. The team also observed the accumulation of dirty water on their premises and found larvae of mosquitoes that could cause malaria or dengue. Considering this, the MCD imposed another fine of Rs 2,000 on the management, he added. The team imposed a total of 16 penalties on Wednesday and recovered a total of Rs 2.41 lakh in revenue. He said that considering the recent rise in dengue cases, a team of 20 members have been formed in MCD to prevent dengue in the city. The sanitation teams have started conducting regular inspections and will impose a minimum penalty of Rs 200 and Rs 500 on a house and commercial establishment respectively that has a favourable environment for the breeding of dengue-causing mosquitoes in their premises. So far, the teams have destroyed mosquito larvae in over 5,000 houses and penalised about 40 establishments. The corporation is taking all possible measures to minimise the risk of dengue in the city, added Khanna.
