The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) along with the police on Monday demolished portions of 27 encroachments on the riverbed of the Rispana river that were constructed after 2016. The corporation had earlier formed a task force on the orders of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and conducted a survey to identify encroachments on the riverbed of the Rispana and Bindal rivers three weeks ago. In the first phase, the teams identified about 550 encroachments in 129 slums alongside the Rispana river that were set up after 2016. After analysing the collected data, the MCD found that out of the identified encroachments, 425 structures were formed on MDDA’s land and 12 on Mussoorie municipality’s land. The MCD issued notices for these 89 encroachments on May 8 and received about 40 objections. The additional municipal commissioner Gopal Ram Binwal said that only 15 objections raised by people were found genuine so the corporation started the demolition process of the remaining 74 encroachments on Monday. However, the corporation mostly demolished the portion of the illegal structure built on the Rispana riverbed. According to the officials, most of the houses were built before 2016 but the corporation demolished structures like boundary walls that were built later. The corporation will continue the demolition process on Tuesday too, as per the officials. Besides this, the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) is also expected to start the demolition process to remove about 400 encroachments next week. The officials said that MDDA sent notices to 413 slum dwellers last week and sought objections supported by relevant documents that prove that their houses were established before 2016. After considering all the objections, the MDDA team will possibly start the demolition process in the first week of June to ensure its timely completion by June 30 as per the NGT orders, the officials added.
