The society, youth, NGOs, celebrities, successful people, and various social and educational institutions will have to come forward and work with the government to ensure the success of the State government’s initiative to make Uttarakhand drug free state by 2025. Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said this while launching the mission drugs-free Devbhoomi at the district jail in Suddhowala here on Thursday. He also inaugurated a bakery unit at the district jail on the occasion. He also interacted with some of the inmates and exhorted them to adopt a positive attitude. The CM made various announcements regarding prisons and inmates on the occasion.

Dhami said that the contribution of every resident of Uttarakhand is important to make this mission a success. He said that the youth should resolutely say no to any type of intoxication and also encourage others to avoid intoxication. The CM expressed hope that products made by inmates in the jails will be available in local markets for sale in the future. He also gave his message through the Doon jail radio operated from the jail. He announced that the name of the department of prisons will be changed to the prison administration and correction service while Bandi Grah will be called Bandi Sudhar Grah. He announced that an inmate welfare fund will be formed with a provision of Rs one crore. A sum of Rs 1,000 as a nutritious food allowance will be facilitated for the prison guard cadre in addition to the uniform allowance. A skill development training centre will also be opened in the Dehradun district jail for the training and rehabilitation of inmates.

“Considering it a place of repentance and improvement, the inmates should have a positive attitude and resolve to become part of the society’s mainstream and contribute to nation-building. The State government has decided that Uttarakhand should be free of drugs by 2025 when the State will mark the silver jubilee of its foundation. Drug addicts are also brought to jails where taking care of them is a major challenge for the authorities. Awareness about drugs free Uttarakhand campaign should be raised in all the jails,” said the CM.
