A large quantity of controlled drugs was recovered from the home of a chemist raided by the district drug inspector along with narcotics cell, vigilance and SIIDCUL police on Thursday. Drug inspector Anita Bharti inspects medical stores from time to time and examines the stock and records there. On Thursday, Bharti raided the house of a chemist in SIIDCUL police station area and recovered a large quantity of controlled medicines including injectables. A case has been filed against the accused in the local police station. According to officials, Bharti had received information that the operator of Pal Medical located in Rawali Mehdood area of SIIDCUL police station area was selling drugs without prescription.  On the basis of this information, the district drug inspector, along with the team of SIIDCUL police station and other departmental personnel concerned raided the house of the shop owner. A large quantity of controlled drugs was recovered from the home. A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered against the accused.

The district drug inspector said that on the basis of earlier complaints Pal Medical store in Rawali Mehdood area was inspected several times but nothing wrong was found at the shop. It was learnt that medicines were not being supplied from the shop but from the home, after which a raid was conducted at the home of the shop operator on Thursday afternoon. Various controlled drugs including painkillers and codeine based syrups were recovered from the home of the accused. As per the rules, the medicines were to be kept at the shop but the accused was selling these illegally sans prescription from his home. The police will also investigate the source of these medicines.

It is pertinent to mention here that apart from the traditional drug cannabis and hard drugs like smack, a number of persons are also abusing pharmaceutical drugs in Haridwar and other parts of the State. The authorities conduct regular checks and take action where required but have so far failed to prevent the thriving abuse of pharmaceuticals.
