In the run up to the New Year celebrations, people have begun attending parties and indulging in hearty meals. Experts emphasise that people with heart conditions and asthma should exercise caution regarding their dietary choices during the New Year celebrations. The increased consumption of alcohol during such celebrations can result in adverse effects which include vomiting, stomach pain and even loss of consciousness, the experts said.

Talking to this correspondent, dietician Richa Kukreti said, “The arrival of the New Year disrupts the usual diet of individuals, causing a potential imbalance. As the New Year coincides with the winter season, people attending parties typically consume hot beverages containing caffeine and indulge in excessive alcohol consumption. The combination of heavy alcohol intake and the consumption of foods high in fat, such as chicken or oily dishes, can lead to various health issues such as constipation, acidity and heartburn. To maintain good health during and after the New Year celebrations, it is better to consume regular, balanced meals during the parties. Additionally, drinking alcohol in moderation can help prevent further negative health consequences of heavy drinking.”

She further stressed the importance of asthma and heart patients exercising caution with their diet and overall well-being during the New Year. Incorporating breathing exercises both in the morning and evening can also aid in combating the effects of the cold weather, she added.

Senior physician Dr Pravin Panwar said that individuals tend to deviate from their regular dietary habits during the New Year celebrations often opting for parties, which can disrupt their routine. This includes excessive consumption of oily and heavy foods, leading to acidity and various health issues. Additionally, increased alcohol intake during these celebrations may result in vomiting, viral diarrhoea and stomach pain. Panwar emphasised the necessity for people to exercise restraint and consume a variety of foods in moderation during New Year parties. He further stressed the importance of individuals with heart conditions and asthma being cautious of their diet during New Year parties and in the winter season.
