Members of Citizens for Green Doon (CFGD) gathered at the the DAV (PG) College on Thursday to motivate youths to save trees and the environment from being destroyed in the name of development.

A group member Ruchi Singh Rao said that chopping of tress is devastating for the environment due to which changes are being observed in weather and temperature of Dehradun. Now there is little difference between Dehradun and Delhi in terms of pollution and to prevent further environmental destruction the youths must stand up against deforestation and to save the city. Considering this, the CFGD is trying to make as many people as possible members of the group.

“False reports are being presented to get the clearance for deforestation and forest fires which can be seen nowadays are also being lit by the people who want to use that area for commercial uses,”she averred.

Another CFGD member Jaya Singh said, “We are targeting youth for awareness to make them understand how life is connected with nature. We will have to set our priority for development and the environment. Development and environment have to go hand in hand but it’s not fair if the environment is destroyed in the name of development.”

CFGD members shared some facts on deforestation, stating that 50 per cent reduction in forest cover has been in Doon valley in the past 20 years. They further averred that 11,000 trees are slated to be axed to reduce travel time by 11 minutes for Delhi-Dehradun expressway and that 10,000 trees are to be cut for the expansion of Dehradun airport in the eco-sensitive area of Shivalik elephant reserve. Expressing concern, they said that sustainability of natural resources will continue to decline alarmingly if deforestation continues.
