The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara has accused the State government of covering up four rape cases in Uttarkashi district. He said that in all the four cases, the victim belonged to the scheduled caste community.

Addressing the media persons at the headquarters of the State Congress, Mahara said that the government has also failed to provide compensation to the rape victims. He said that the incidents of atrocities against women are increasing in the State. Referring to the alleged rape cases, the PCC president said that they occurred in the year 2021-22 in Purola, Chinyalisaud, Dharasu and Dunda in Uttarkashi district. He added that all these cases went unreported in the media. The PCC president said that under the POCSO Act, a sum of Rs seven lakh is provided to the victim and Rs 10 Lakh in case of gangrape. This compensation gets doubled if the victim belongs to the SC or ST category.  Referring to the Ankita Bhandari murder case, he said that the family is awaiting justice even after ten months. Mahara said since justice is being delayed he will fast for a day as a means of penance. He said that BJP is trying to divert the attention from the issue by spreading canards. The PCC president also accused the ruling party of conspiring to save the culprits in the Ankita Bhandari murder case. He said that the Congress party is committed to ensure that justice is provided to Ankita Bhandari. The PCC president added that the people of Uttarakhand have given a big mandate to the BJP which has made its leaders autocratic. The chairman of the SC cell of Congress party Darshan Lal, chief spokesperson Garima Dasauni, Sheeshpal Singh Bisht and Amarjeet Singh were present on the occasion.
