Compared to past years, there is a possibility of colder winter and heavier snowfall in the Himalayan region, some other parts of India and some European nations. According to Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital, scientist Narendra Singh, this year is going to be impacted by La Nina. During this phenomenon, the surface temperature of the Pacific ocean drops while cold intensifies in all places which are affected by western disturbance rising from the Mediterranean sea.
Due to this, there is possibility of cold intensifying in the Himalayan and adjoining regions in India and places in Europe including Italy and France among others. The impact of the phenomenon will also depend on the intensity of the western disturbance. Singh further informed that while generally the cold lasts from December to February, this time due to the La Nina weather pattern, the cold which started in November is expected to continue till March. Compared to past years, the cold this season is expected to last up to 25 days more than usual. Stating that the temperature will start dropping consistently from December, he added that there is also a likelihood of light change in this due to human activities
