Police arrest nine men for illegal betting on IPL

The Dehradun police arrested nine accused of illegal online betting on the Indian Premier League (IPL) from a flat in Brahmawala village of Rajpur on Thursday. The entire online betting network was being operated from Dubai, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said.  He informed that the police received confidential information about a gang carrying out illegal online betting in a flat in the Rajpur area after which the team raided the flat and arrested nine accused. The police have frozen the account with Rs 9.5 lakh. The police also recovered 50 mobile phones, eight laptops, ATM cards, debit cards and several other electronic devices from the accused’s possession. The accused have done transactions worth crores of rupees through the bank account which was being used for the betting. A case has been registered against the accused in Rajpur police station under section 3/4 of the Gambling Act. The accused have told the police that the entire network of online betting is operated by a person named Shubham from Dubai.  These nine accused were doing the betting work and other associated processes in Dehradun to make their clients bet on IPL cricket matches. The accused have claimed that they had made about Rs nine lakh in a day and were planning to make a profit of about Rs one crore by the end of this IPL. The nine accused have been identified as Vikas Kumar (33), Lokesh Gupta (29), Siraj Memon (26), Monu (24), Saurabh (23), Sonu Kumar (23), Shivam (23), Vivek Adhikari (20) and Shatrughan Kumar (21). These men belong to different areas of Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh. The SSP also announced a cash reward of Rs 10,000 to the team that nabbed the gang.
